Qwen3 Prefill Single Decoder

Why a single decoder layer?

This notebook demonstrates working with a single Qwen3 Prefill decoder layer. The full Qwen3-8B prefill model has 36 decoder layers. Running the complete prefill (sequence length 1024) on ISS takes on the order of 1B+ cycles per decoder, making a full-model ISS run impractically slow. Instead, we isolate a single decoder layer to validate correctness against ONNX Runtime, while demonstrating that the full compilation pipeline (cut → custom ops → CGC → QLLVM) works end-to-end.

In here we demonstrate:

  1. Cutting the single decoder from the entire qwen3 prefill model.
  2. Converting ONNX operators to Quadric Custom operators for efficient performance.
  3. Lowering the ONNX through the Chimera Graph Compiler (CGC). Compiling C++ to assembly using Quadric LLVM compiler with Chimera GPNPU backend.
  4. Running the single decoder results on Instruction Set Simulator (ISS) and then validating against the onnx outputs.

Target Hardware: QC-P (Quadric Chimera Perform) with 4 cores, 2MB OCM, 16 MACs/PE

Download the model data from AWS.

This data involves:

2. Model Preparation

2.1 Fix Shapes for Prefill Execution

The downloaded ONNX model has dynamic shapes. We fix these to static shapes for prefill inference with batch_size=1 and sequence_length=1024.

2.2 Isolate Single Decoder Layer

Extract decoder layer 0 from the full 36-layer model for targeted validation. This reduces ISS runtime while proving the compilation pipeline works correctly.

4. Compilation Pipeline

4.1 CGC Compilation (ONNX → C++)

The Chimera Graph Compiler (CGC) converts the ONNX graph into optimized C++ code for the Quadric platform.

  • Memory-efficient scheduling for 2MB OCM constraint
  • Operation fusion and graph optimization
  • Hardware-aware tensor layout

Compile and Execute on ISS

The sdk source command performs three key operations:

  1. Compiles the CGC-generated C++ code using the Quadric LLVM compiler
  2. Links against Chimera runtime libraries and custom op implementations
  3. Executes the compiled binary on the Instruction Set Simulator (ISS) with cycle-accurate hardware modeling

The ISS simulates the full QC-P processor including cores, memory hierarchy, and interconnects. This produces output.bin containing the decoder's output tensor.

Compilation Parameters:

  • --target QC-P: Target QC-P (Quadric Chimera Perform) processor architecture
  • --num-cores 4: 4-core multicore configuration
  • --ocm-size 2MB: 2MB on-chip memory (OCM) per core
